Make sure that your garden contents are adequately insured

Defaqto highlights the importance of getting sufficient insurance cover for your garden as many don’t consider exactly how much our garden content is worth.

Items such as water features, decking, garden furniture, outside lighting, gas barbecues and swing seats are commonly found in most gardens, and the cost to replace these items can be expensive, so it is essential that you are adequately insured for these items. But do most people consider the cover needed for garden contents when purchasing their home insurance cover?

Mike Powell, consultant for general insurance at Defaqto says: "Consumers should consider the amount of cover provided by their insurer for contents kept in the garden". Research by Defaqto shows that of the home contents policies available, 38% provide £500 or less, 47% provide between £750 and £1,000, and 15% provide more than £1,000. The cost to replace some of the items kept in the garden for example, following a theft could run into hundreds of pounds.

Powell also adds: "cover for plants, trees and shrubs in the garden is another area that is not always thought about. Our research into the cover provided noted some surprising results; with 68% of contents policies available providing no cover at all, whilst 17% provide £1,000 or less and only 10% provide more than £1,000 towards the replacement of garden plants.

"Consumers do not always consider the true value of their garden and should take care to understand the extent of the cover on offer."
