Home improvements 'boost the value of a house'

6 March, 2008

Those looking to sell their house might want to consider embarking on a number of home improvements to increase the value of their property, it has been claimed

Brain Berry, director of external affairs for the Federation of Master Builders, explained that substantial changes to a property could boost its worth significantly.

He said: "A loft conversion costs about £35,000 and the return on that would probably be adding an extra £60,000 to your property."

How much is your house worth?

Berry added that an extra bedroom - perhaps created by a garage conversion - could increase the value of the property by "ten of thousands of pounds".

People who do not want to move, but simply want more space in their house might also want to consider such work, he concluded.

Last year, the Guardian reported that basement conversions are becoming increasingly popular because they offer more space at a lower cost than moving home.
